The Great Battles

The Great Battles

The Battle of the River Tchernaya and The Fall of Palestro, 30 May 1859, both in the Fondazione Cariplo Collection, are just two of the canvases that provide the focus for the exhibition “Le grandi battaglie del Risorgimento” (“The Great Battles of the Risorgimento”), which opened on 20 March 2011 at Palazzo Reale in Milan as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification. The show is devoted to paintings that document the Risorgimento period and the bloody battles fought for independence.
The President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, made a speech at the opening of the exhibition.

The Battle of the River Tchernaya marked Gerolamo Induno’s debut in the monumental history painting genre inspired by events of the Risorgimento, and he went on to become one of its leading exponents. Gerolamo Induno and his brother Domenico, also a painter, were directly involved in the Five Days of Milan (18–22 March 1848), during which its citizens rebelled against the occupying Austrian forces, and also participated as volunteers in Giuseppe Garibaldi’s campaigns ten years later.

The Fall of Palestro, 30 May 1859 was displayed in the Esposizione di Belle Arti at the Brera Academy in 1860. It depicts the Piedmont army’s first victory over the Austrians during the second war of independence that led to the annexation of Lombardy to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
